HOW-TO GUIDES: Guardianship for children
GuardianshipGuardianship is a court process by which a person is given custody of the child or authority over the child’s property (estate) or both. These cases are brought by the person seeking to be appointed guardian or by someone else in the family asking the court to appoint a guardian by filing a petition and getting the approval of the court. If custody of the minor was awarded to a non-parent through the juvenile dependency court, this does NOT apply. If Child Protective Services (CPS) is involved in your case, you probably have to go to the juvenile court to find out what you can do.
